Stozharov Vladimir Fedorovich (1926 - 1973)

Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts
The Honoured Art Worker of RSFSR
Winner of the I.E. Repin State Prize of RSFSR

A well-known Moscow painter V.F. Stozharov graduated from V.I. Surikov Institute in 1951. In his vivid and picturesque works he depicted the nature and architecture of the Russian North, the way of life and the arts of the Russian peasantry. All his creations was dedicated to the only subject - countryside and his homeland.

Since 50s of XX c. Stozharov has made a lot of tours of the country, especially to the North regions, where he collected material for his future works. His trips to Pskov, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Vladimir, Arkhangelsk regions and abroad resulted in a great amount of studies, which later were realized in his paintings. His art withstood the test of time and found a worthy place in collections of the greatest homeland and foreign museums. The Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum and about 90 museums of Russia and former Soviet republics have a permanent exposition of Stozharov’s works.

Vladimir Fedorovich was endowed with a rare gift of colour. His works are both material and poetical at the same time. His art is profoundly national and monumental. He paints cathedrals of the North and churches of the middle part of Russia, wide panoramic views of villages, loghouses, widespread fields, common people and their work days and holidays.

Still life is a specific line of his creations. The depicted loaves of bread, bratinas, samovars, clay jugs, jugs with kvass, spinning-wheels seem to retain the warmth of human hands. All his creative life from 50s till 70s of XX c. when he suddenly passed away, was a resolute assent to perfection. The name of Vladimir Fedorovich Stozharov is in the first ranks of the domestic art masters of the middle of XX c. among the successors of the best traditions of Russian realistic school of painting.
